Management 2.0

Posted in Technology Ventures at 1:56 am by Ray Wu

It seems that IT management is and will continue to be a major fighting ground for IT investment. Even though VCs have been shunning away from IT infrastructure investment, open source and SaaS based management tools are jumping into this crowded space from everywhere. Here are just a few I know of:

If I miss anyone, let me know. With the continuous commoditization of system and software, I am not surprised by this trend. This is healthy. Anything that helps customers simplify their IT management is moving to the right direction. But infrastructure management tends to be a winner-takes-all game in the end. Customer won’t be happy with multiple event alarms, dash boards or control towers over its IT infrastructure. If dominate players like HP, IBM, CA, BMC are willing to shift gears, lose some short term revenue to focus on competing head-to-head in this space, the game might change very soon.

IT Management - Open Sesame !

Indeed I agree that investments in IT to stay competitive has become inevitable for organizations across industries. Oh and as you mentioned , I think the open source breed is a tribe that’s yet to get its due. Some of them have been making a splash..I have heard my colleagues talking about how the Splunk piece has made their life in the data center simpler ! I guess moving forward, a lot of players in the open source application side are gonna emerge…consider teh success of Joomla! in content mgmnt.. Maybe a consolidation of these open source players eventually would result. I also believe that remote infrastructure mgmnt is the ticking oportunity that is yet underutilised.

The gears the dominant players would have to shift are largely out of their control. They depend on a direct sales model. Basically new license revenue = sales & marketing expense. They can’t come down market and even if they did they’d destroy their market cap. They’re not agile enough to adopt and can’t sell at 25 - 50% of their current prices. They’d loose money on every deal.

Thanks for the mention, BTW. We really appreciate it.
